A Hope
started as a single-movement work, but grew later into three movements
for solo handbells and piano. The first movement, "Odyssey in the
Heart," can still be performed alone with the provided alternate ending.
Each movement suggests a different sort of personal journey. The first,
with it's alternating themes, evokes exploration of one's feelings.
"Sanctuary," the second movement, is a set of variations two well-known
versions of Praise God, From Whom All Blessings Flow.
It is a spiritual meditation. The final movement, "Mind's Journey,"
begins with a flowing bell-tree solo before launching into a lively
12/8 meter. Themes from the first movement combine with new melodies to
spark the imagination and and exploration of the inner universe of the
mind.
Although A Hope is intended to be secular in nature, it is
also appropriate in a traditional worship setting. As a complete work,
it can serve as a prelude to service. Otherwise, "Odyssey in the Heart"
can be used alone during a meditation or as an offertory anthem.
